Leading an Unrea
chable Journey

(PARTICULAR LOCAL PLACE)。

This piece is broken down into four parts:

1. Approaching the surface of water – Entrance of Dunhuang Road Teacher’s District Community Center

In the early days, the expansion of the city of Dalongdong followed alongside the development of the waterway network comprised of the Danshui and Jilong rivers. Life in those days depended heavily on the rivers. Nowadays, though, their significance has been marginalized. This location so happens to lie in the middle of these two rivers, a discovery made while the city was being developed and while a transportation network was being built. The discovery, however, minimized the role this location played, cutting it out of view of the outside world. The Teacher District Activity Center is located under the Dunhuang Overpass, a structure that shares its namesake with a remote location in China. Being situated under a bridge of such modernity calls to mind the significance of Dunhuang and thus the importance of the Teacher District Center, an establishment that drives the life force of this community. This project, therefore, attempts to cast light on an otherwise dark entrance to the Teacher’s Community Center. Moreover, in keeping with the theme of water, it makes use of eight lights, 16 PVC boards and a complexly woven set of infrared lights for controlling the sound of water, a reminder of just how close this location is to the water. At the same time, the project lends both historical and geographical significance to this community center while underscoring the undertones of art. In addition, the project serves as a way to ensure security by lighting up an otherwise dimly-lit area at night.

2. Above the Edge – The Design of a Bus Stop for the Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired

In keeping with the spirit of public arts, the design of the bus stop at the Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired was changed to make the space a bit more interesting. Brick was used to replace the pre-existing concrete structure, creating a distinct new domain that summons up a feeling of comfort among passers-by. Additionally, symbols and insignias were emblazoned in the ground at the bus stop, which makes the space even livelier and also conveys the feeling that this stop indeed belongs here. In the future, this bus stop will not just be any old bus stop, but perhaps a beginning-point of sorts from which passers-by and travelers alike could recognize Datongdong.

3. Yesterday Once More – The tree-lined sidewalk of Jiuquan Street

There is only one tree on this section of sidewalk along Jiuquan Street. There is also a dearth of vegetation here, owing to an inability for water to reach it. It is our hope, then, that this one tree might come to embody the spirit of Jiuquan Street, shaping itself into a place on which stories about the city will be centered, a place where birds sing and flowers will grow, a place that will provide a momentary respite for passers-by. This, hopefully, can become the starting point for turning this plot of city-space into greenspace.

Among the stories in the city, one might describe a couple strolling along a Jiuquanhua Street lined with trees. They, in turn, plant a commemorative tree to cement their own love, promising that in 40 years time, they will come back to see the tree. After these 40 years, they return to find that Jiuquanhua Street went from being a bustling locale in the big city to a place that no one visited. And the only tree remaining is the one the couple planted.

Perhaps such a place could give rise to stories similar to this one.

4. Hope for the Future – Bao-An Gong Bus Stop

Materials from a previous art exhibit entitled, “Look Out for the Airplane,” were left behind and used in this exhibit. What sticks out in this piece are the unique life scenarios that have occurred as well as the associations that residents make with them. The bus stop is the focal point for understanding the community, or a daily gathering place for residents, given the uniqueness of this location (Bao-An Gong Station) and the envisaging of an airplane cutting through the sky (this location’s unique characteristic and collective memory). As a result, one can think of this bus stop as a landing pad for planes. What is sketched is a kind of forgotten feeling of a land and a dream of soaring through the sky. This installation piece makes use of a simple U-shaped character, and uses Bao-An Guan as the backdrop and structure for maintaining the existence of the bus stop, possessing the spatial function of waiting and buttressing the areas deficient in function. Lights are also utilized to simulate the effect of a passing airplane, and poetry written by community residents is used to turn this space into one that feels like an authentic, life experience.
